New Dubai Rule: Pay Your Traffic Fines Before Renewing Your Visa

Starting July 2025, there’s a new rule in Dubai you should know about — if you have unpaid traffic fines, you won’t be able to renew your residency visa.

This update comes straight from the GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) and is now active in a pilot phase. Basically, before you apply for any visa renewal, cancellation, or change — your traffic fine record will be checked automatically. If there are unpaid fines, your visa process will be blocked until you clear them.

So, What Does This Mean for You?

Got fines? Pay them before starting any visa service.

The GDRFA system is now connected directly to Dubai Police — so there’s no way around it.

This isn’t just for renewals — it also applies to visa cancellations and other services.

Can’t Pay It All at Once?

Don’t worry. If your fines are over AED 3,000, you can pay in interest-free installments. You can also use the Dubai Police app, RTA website, smart kiosks, or the Dubai Now app to check and pay your fines.

Why Is This Happening?

According to GDRFA Chief Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al Marri, the goal is to encourage responsible driving — not to punish people. Too many residents leave fines unpaid and keep renewing their visas, even with huge amounts due. This system is meant to fix that.

Where Is It Active?

Right now, the system is in its trial phase, so it’s not rolled out everywhere yet. For example, it’s not active at the airport GDRFA center. But the full rollout is expected very soon.
